Aerial Yoga vs. Aerial Silks

One of the things people (not aerialists) ask me the most is: "What is the difference between aerial yoga and aerial silks?"

The short answer? Aerial yoga uses a hammock instead of two pieces of fabric, and it is VERY low to the ground. In fact, most of the time you can touch the ground and use only a yoga mat below the hammock. It’s also a gentle, slow practice that does not involve climbing or acrobatics (we call the acrobatic use of hammock ‘sling’ and that is used at greater height with a crash mat to allow for drops). So if you have a fear of heights, aerial yoga is not a problem.

But what’s so great about aerial yoga? First, many more people are capable of doing an aerial yoga class than an aerial silks class. It appeals to a much wider audience. Second, it’s faster to learn and get amazing benefits quickly. Whereas aerial silks takes a relatively long time to build enough skill, you can learn how to do aerial yoga right away! From the very first class, you are likely to see and feel the benefits.

Exploring the Wonders of Aerial Yoga

In recent years, aerial yoga has soared in popularity, captivating fitness enthusiasts and wellness seekers worldwide. Combining traditional yoga poses, Pilates, aerial bodywork and dance with the use of a hammock, this unique form of exercise offers a range of benefits for the body and mind. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or a curious beginner, aerial yoga provides an exciting opportunity to enhance flexibility, balance, and strength while experiencing a new dimension of physical activity.

What is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial yoga, also known as anti-gravity yoga, involves performing yoga poses while being suspended from a hammock or silk fabric. This apparatus is securely attached to the ceiling, allowing practitioners to perform a variety of movements and stretches with the support and assistance of gravity. The hammock acts as a prop to aid in achieving proper alignment, deepening stretches, and exploring poses that might be challenging on the ground.

Being suspended in the hammock like a cocoon is one of the most relaxing experiences ever! It’s a great way to start your day. Beyond that, practitioners often say they find it meditative. You can fully relax into your body as you sink into an incredible ‘weightlessness’ with zero effort. 'Floating' is often the term we hear to describe this amazing sensation.

The Benefits of Aerial Yoga

Enhanced Flexibility: One of the standout benefits of aerial yoga is its ability to improve flexibility. The hammock allows for deeper stretches and helps elongate the spine, muscles, and connective tissues. Gravity assists in achieving a greater range of motion, making it easier to attain and hold poses that might be difficult on the mat. Over time, consistent practice can lead to increased flexibility and suppleness in the body.

Improved Balance and Coordination: Balancing in the air requires engaging core muscles and stabilizing muscles that might not be as active during traditional yoga. The challenge of maintaining stability in suspended poses helps develop better balance and coordination. This can translate into improved performance in other physical activities and daily movements.

Strength Building: Aerial yoga is an effective full-body workout that targets various muscle groups. Holding poses in suspension requires significant strength in the core, arms, legs, and back. The resistance provided by the hammock adds an extra layer of challenge, helping to build lean muscle and increase overall strength. As you progress, you'll notice improved muscle tone and definition.

Spinal Decompression and Alignment: Hanging upside down or performing inversions in the hammock can decompress the spine and alleviate pressure on the vertebral discs. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with back pain or those who spend long hours sitting. The gentle traction provided by the hammock promotes proper spinal alignment and can help relieve tension and discomfort.

Stress Relief and Relaxation: Aerial yoga incorporates elements of mindfulness and relaxation. The gentle swaying of the hammock and the sensation of being suspended can create a calming and meditative experience. The practice encourages deep breathing and promotes relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety. It's an excellent way to unwind and find mental clarity in a busy world.

Increased Body Awareness: Practicing aerial yoga enhances proprioception—the body's awareness of its position in space. The need to navigate movements in the air sharpens your sense of body awareness and spatial orientation. This heightened awareness can improve posture, movement patterns, and overall body mechanics.
